Etymology[edit]

First attested as verhoven in 1333. Compound of Middle Dutch ver (far, distant) and the dative plural form of hof (farmstead, homestead). So named to distinguish the settlement from Nerhoven. Compare also the toponyms Naastenbest and Verrenbest and Doonheide and Verreheide.
