Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as flothorp in 943. Compound of dialectal vlo (“stream, river”) and a metathised form of dorp (“village, settlement”). The interpration of the first element as Proto-Germanic *flôh- (“rocky layer”) is incorrect.
