Etymology[edit]

First attested as wadebrouche in 1378. Compound of Waal (Walloon, Romanophone) and broek (marsh, marshland). The element Waal appears to have been added to distinguish the settlement from Broek. Compare Vijlen, Walem and Wahlwiller.
