Etymology[edit]

Named after the two independent discoverers: the Japanese seismologist Kiyoo Wadati, and the American seismologist Hugo Benioff

Wadati-Benioff zone (plural Wadati-Benioff zones)

  1. (geology) A deep-level seismic zone on the line of subduction. This zone can be as deep as 700km.
