From Middle High German wecke, from Old High German wecki, weggi (wedge; wedge-shaped baked good), from Proto-Germanic *wagjaz (wedge). Cognate with German Wecken,Dutch wig (wedge), English wedge; also Lithuanian vãgis (hook, peg).
