Etymology

First attested as westerwidwerd in 1421. Compound of wester (western, west-) and a compound of Old Frisian uuide (willow, Salix sp.) and uurð (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). The element wester was added to distinguish the settlement from Oosterwijtwerd.
