Translations with or without interwiki links[edit]

  • Voting on: The standards for where to direct links in the Translations section. Specifically, for foreign-language (FL) translations normally linked to that FL term on the English Wiktionary, whether to additionally link to that FL term on the FL Wiktionary (when there is a Wiktionary in that language). This vote does not address the style of any additional links, which if applicable and necessary will be decided by a future vote.
Once Now that the vote has started, vote in support of as many options as you would agree to. Abstain only if you would not agree to any of the choices.
Please discuss any additional options here before the vote is underway. Once Now that the vote has begun, no additional options can be listed. (They can, of course, be discussed, as would be relevant to procedure.)

Option 0[edit]

Do not link to the FL Wiktionary. Entries of any language are already automatically linked to the same title on FL Wiktionaries when they exist.

Option 1[edit]

Also link to the FL Wiktionary for red links only. For blue links, the FL term on the FL Wiktionary can be reached from the FL term on the English Wiktionary.

So, Davilla, How would the link in the translation section determine whether an entry in the linked language existed, as opposed to an entry in another language? --EncycloPetey 03:01, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It couldn't. But if the page exists at all, then there is a place for interwiki links, and the FL wiki can be reached as claimed.
I'd like to point out that the FL link that it seems everyone supports (in my case only in these limited instances) can't even determine if the page exists on the FL wiki. DAVilla 04:21, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Note the fr.wikt does red/blue magic with a bot that checks the FL wikt. (I'm not really recommending this, just observing that it is done, therefore possible.)

Option 2[edit]

Also link to the FL Wiktionary in any case. This provides a more direct link to the FL term on the FL Wiktionary.

  1. Early support. --Connel MacKenzie 21:21, 31 December 2006 (UTC) I think it is a bad habit to list votes that haven't begun yet...I don't quite understand why such a thing would be done.[reply]
Because the discussion isn't linked in yet? --EncycloPetey 21:31, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Because we can't be sure that all contributors have seen all options. Since there have not been any new options added since your vote, I'd wonder if there's really any need to re-affirm. That is, if you didn't then I would rule that way.
Maybe you're right and it's a bit confusing to do it this way though. DAVilla 15:14, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh, sorry, I almost forgot to re-affirm. Support Connel MacKenzie 10:13, 15 January 2007 (UTC) --Connel MacKenzie 10:13, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  4. Support Jeffqyzt 20:14, 10 January 2007 (UTC) This puts two options (our page, and the FL wiki's page) both immediately available to the user to choose/compare.[reply]
  5. Support henne 12:28, 12 January 2007 (UTC) Again, use {{t|langcode|translation}}.[reply]
  6. Support Robert Ullmann 15:14, 15 January 2007 (UTC) with t or trad, understanding that it needs work, and people's opinions may change if the result is very good, or very bad ;-) (why is this vote shorter than the one-month default?)[reply]
It's shorter so that it can wrap up by the time the next vote starts, which is to determine the style with more certainty. That would be irrelevant if this one had turned up negative. There are a few things I'd have done differently though, and I won't object if anyone challenges the results. Still, the conclusion looks unavoidable. DAVilla 17:19, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Support DAVilla 17:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC) with the request to investigate how to make the color of the link dependent on the existence of the term on the FL Wiktionary.[reply]

Abstain[edit]

Decision[edit]

  • Although the timeframe for this vote was short, it and the vote before it, which concluded on the same day, strongly suggest that the interwiki links are desired. Number of votes in parentheses for options 0 (0), 1 (1) and 2 (7). The winning option had 7 for and none opposed. DAVilla 17:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Does this mean we can discuss implementing it in Javascript, automatically, now? There is no template that is going to be forced, for using this, right? The JS will go through translation sections and add the link based on some table of language name/codes, and unrecognized language names (or misspellings) will simply get no link. That's the next step, right? So this moves to WT:GP now? --Connel MacKenzie 01:42, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I strongly suggest that {{t}} be used for this, after it has been cleaned up. The format is much clearer than an explicit superscript and link in the translations section. New editors will not understand the use. I think using a template is much easier there. However, first some technical problems have to be solved for {{t}}, see my comments on the talk page there. henne 11:52, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
