Etymology[edit]

First attested as de wischele in 1273. Etymology uncertain. Possibilities include a compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *wisô- (pasture) or Old Dutch Widso (a personal name) and lo (light forest) and a derivation from Middle Dutch wissel (changing, variable) (used here to indicate land that changes hands each year).
