English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An anglicisation of the German Weissang surname. Though a surface analysis might suggest the meaning "wise song", the German surname is actually an alteration—due to influence from German Sang (song)—of a derivative of Middle High German wīssage (soothsayer). The Middle High German word was inherited from Old High German wīzzago (soothsayer, seer), which in turn was inherited from Proto-West Germanic *wītagō (wise one; prophet).

Ultimately of the same origin as the English word wiseacre, and cognate with German Weissager.
