Etymology[edit]
First attested as zuoechdyc in 1319. Compound of the toponym Zwaag, Middle Dutch dyc (“levee”) and west (“west”). Named after a nearby levee. The element west was added to distinguish the settlement from Zwaagdijk-Oost.
