Attested as ZWARTSLUISJE (HET) in 1851. Compound of zwart (black) and the diminutive form of sluis (lock, sluice). Named after a nearby sluice. Compare Blauwe Sluis, Blauwesluis, Rode Sluis and Zwartsluis.
