Yoruba[edit]

Abẹ́rẹ́ ìránṣọ

Etymology[edit]

Some sources suggest it may come from Arabic إِبْرَة (ʔibra), however the Hausa word from this Arabic root does not resemble the Yoruba form. Thus, either Yoruba inherited directly from Arabic as it did not inherit it through Hausa, which is generally the way Arabic words enter the Yoruba vocabulary.
