Etymology[edit]

abort +‎ nemnd, first part from Latin abortus, perfect active participle of aborior (miscarry), formed from ab + orior (come into being). Second part from Old Norse nefnd (denomination, name, tribunal), derived from Old Norse nefna (mention), from Proto-Germanic *namnijaną (to name, call), from *namô + *-janą, first part from Proto-Indo-European *h₁nómn̥.
