From Proto-Cushitic *ʔ-b-r-/*ʔ-r-b-, which is likely connected to Proto-Semitic *b-r-ʔ-. Compare Hebrew ברא (bará), Aramaic ברא (b'rā), Arabic برأ (baraʔa), and Oromo uumuu.
