  1. (pathology) A condition of the abdomen which is indicated by an acute onset of severe pain.[1]

Usage notes[edit]

An acute abdomen is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and it may be a sign of a number of underlying causes, such as appendicitis, ulcer, peritonitis etc.
