Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A formation from Proto-Albanian *apo-t-is, based on Proto-Indo-European *apo- (away, off), with the labial plosive followed by back vowel yielding -f- (cf. avull, afër), and -is-, as well as -os-, yielding zero in unstressed position. Cognate to Proto-Germanic *aftiz (again) (whence Old English eftesoons (again, soon) > English after). Related to afër. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
