From Middle Irish aithnech (wise, knowing), from Old Irish aithgne (act of knowing, recognising, perceiving; knowledge, recognition, perception), verbal noun of ad·gnin (know, recognize; perceive, be aware of, understand); synchronically, aithne (recognition; act of recognizing) or aithin (know, recognize, identify) +‎ -ach.
