Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Allergie. Coined by Austrian pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet in 1906 from Ancient Greek ἄλλος (állos, other) + ἔργον (érgon, work, activity), on the model of Energie. Featuring +‎ -ija suffix.
