From Medieval Latin algorithmus, a by-form of algorismus introduced under the influence of Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós, number). A Latinization of Arabic الْخُوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵuwārizmiyy, native of Khowarizm), surname of the Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī.
