From Proto-Loloish *ko² (Bradley), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with Nuosu (mu gu), Burmese မီးခိုး (mi:hkui:), Naxi meelkeeq, Japhug tɤkhɯ, Chepang म्‍हेःकुः (hmeʔ.kuʔ), Yamphu मेॽखु (me'khu), Newar कुँ (), Tedim Chin [script needed] (khu¹).
