Etymology[edit]

alyva (oil; olive tree) +‎ uoga (berry). Compare vynuogė for the shift to -uogė.

alỹvuogė f (plural alỹvuogės) stress pattern 1

  1. olive (fruit of the olive tree)
    Synonym: alyva
    alyvuogių aliejusolive oil
    juodos alyvuogėsblack olives

Usage notes[edit]

  • alyvuogė is much more common than alyva in describing the fruit of the olive tree.
