From Armenian ամիրա (amira), from Old Armenian ամիրայ (amiray), from Classical Syriac ܐܡܝܪܐ (ʾămīrāʾ), from Arabic أَمِير (ʔamīr, commander). Doublet of amir, Amir, emir, and admiral.

Noun[edit]

  1. (historical) A member of a wealthy class of Armenian grandees in Constantinople which was in charge of national Armenian matters in the Ottoman Empire before the Armenian National Constitution of 1860 was adopted.
