From translingual Ampelidaceae (former name of Vitaceae) +‎ -aceous, from Ancient Greek ἄμπελος (ámpelos, grapevine) + -ίδης (-ídēs, -son, indicating a familial connection) + -aceae (-aceous, resembling).
