Etymology[edit]

Derived from the present stem aplok- of aplocīt (to wrap around), itself from ap- +‎ locīt (to fold, to bend), +‎ -ne, with an intermediate epenthetic s. The word was coined at the end of the 19th century but only became popular in the 20th century, replacing the earlier borrowing kuverts.[1]
