Etymology 1[edit]
Uncertain. Possibly from Vulgar Latin root *rhizomō, from Ancient Greek ῥίζα (rhíza, “root, base, foundation”) (compare Greek ρίζωμα (rízōma, “rhizome”)), or alternatively, through metathesis, from a Vulgar Latin root *remediō, from Latin remedium. Compare Romanian rezema, reazem.
