Etymology[edit]

Suffix of arbeta (work) +‎ -are (-er), inherited from Old Swedish arbeidare. First attested in the 15th century. Cognate with Danish arbejder, Dutch arbeider and German Arbeiter.

Insect sense; attested since 1860.
