From *aswinan (mare's) +‎ dadan (milk), from *asva, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *éśwāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos (horse). Compare ructandadan (sour milk).

Cognate with Lithuanian ašvà (mare), Sanskrit अश्व (áśva), Latin equus and Ancient Greek ἵππος (híppos).
