Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew-m-, a derivation of *h₂ew- (to see, perceive). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic оумъ (umŭ, mind) and indirectly Ancient Greek αἰσθάνομαι (aisthánomai, to perceive), Sanskrit आविस् (āvís, openly, manifestly, evidently), Latin audiō, and Hittite 𒌋𒀪𒄭 (u-uḫ-ḫi, I see).
