From Proto-Balto-Slavic *awiś- ~ *awiź-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew-iǵʰ(s)-eh₂, or of non-Indo-European substrate origin.

Cognate with Lithuanian aviža (oat), Old Prussian wyse (oats), Proto-Slavic *ovьsъ (oats), Latin avena.
