From Ottoman Turkish آیتمق (ayıtmak), ایتمك (eyitmek), from Proto-Turkic *ayt-, causative of *ay- (to say). Cognate with Tatar әйтү (äytü, to say), Kazakh айту (aitu, to say), Kyrgyz айтуу (aytuu, to say), Crimean Tatar aytmaq (to say), Uzbek aytmoq (to say), Uyghur ئېيتماق (ëytmaq, to say), Kumyk айтмакъ (aytmaq, to say), dialectal Khakas айт- (ayt-, to say), айыт- (ayıt-, to sing), Yakut ыйыт- (ıyıt-, to ask), Chuvash ыйт (yjt, to ask).
