From at (water) +‎ -yot (a thing abundantly owning...) +‎ -tzin (diminutive). From Proto-Nahuan *aayootl, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *aya-wɨt-ta (big tortoise). Cognate with Classical Nahuatl āyōtl (turtle, tortoise).
