Probably from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baʀəq (doublet of barah), from Proto-Austronesian *baʀəq (abscess, boil, swelling on the body). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
