  1. (marketing) The promotion of a product to end users or retailers in order to create demand earlier in the supply chain, e.g. with wholesalers.
    • 1984, Industrial Marketing Digest, volume 9, page 132:
      Last issue IMD described how Mullard “sold” its AX TV tube to retailers in order to put pressure on setmakers to incorporate it in their products: a classic backsell.
