From Malay berniaga (“trade”), from either Portuguese veniaga (“merchant; merchandise”) or directly from Sanskrit वणिजक (vaṇijaka, “merchant”), from वाणिज (vāṇija, “merchant, trader”). (cf. Cebuano banyaga (“rascal”), Kapampangan banyaga (“trade”), Tagalog banyaga (“foreigner”)).
