bastard fox (plural bastard foxes)

  1. A cross between a standard red fox and a silver fox, featuring fur coloration of both.
    • 1967, Mammals of pennsylvania, page 188:
      One curious mutation, or coat variation, is the one known best as the Samson fox, but sometimes called the burnt, scorched or bastard fox. This animal lacks the long guard hairs and remains throughout its career a woolly, nondescript character without adequate protection from the cold of the winter.
