Tagalog[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish vaina.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

bayna or bayná (Baybayin spelling ᜊᜌ᜔ᜈ)

  1. sheath; scabbard (of a bladed weapon)
    Synonyms: kaluban, suksukan
    • 1973, Pedro A. Gagelonia, Ang Kalinangan ng mga unang Pilipino[1], National Bookstore, page 151:
Ang mga Igorot ay mahusay gumawa ng mga kagamitan at sandatang ito, nguni't hindi sila gumagawa ng bayna o lalagyan, kaya't ang mga talim ay laging nakikita o nakalabas.
The Igorots are good at making these tools and weapons, but they do not make sheaths nor holders, thus the blades are either shown or exposed.
  2. holster (of a gun)
