English[edit]

Noun[edit]

begavolt (plural begavolts)

  1. (dated, nonstandard) A billion volts.
    • 1900, Journal of the Franklin Institute, volume 149, page 461:
If the volt, ampere and ohm were taken as the absolute units, the practical units would be the ampere, begohm and begavolt, names just as convenient as ampere, coulomb and farad.
    • 1954, Astounding Science Fiction, volume 52, numbers 4-53, page 161:
Christofilos' idea was of no use whatever to him; multi-begavolt synchrotrons can only be built by multi-billionaires.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Proposed, but never seriously adopted, as a unit of measure; later used in a few science fiction works.
