English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Originally "bellbird", ornithologically altered to "bell miner" due to membership of the genus Mamorina, which were called "miners" owing to the similarity in appearance of Manorina melanocephala to the Indian myna.

Noun[edit]

bell miner (plural bell miners)

  1. A bellbird, a honeyeater of species Manorina melanophrys, endemic to southeastern Australia.
    • 2016 December, Nigel Andrew, “Beware the Cassowary”, in Literary Review:
One species, the bell miner, is so keen on lerp and so protective of its sources that it fights off all other birds, including the small insectivorous ones that would eat the psyllids.
