Borrowed from Arabic بَاذِنْجَان (bāḏinjān), from Classical Persian بادنجان (bādinjān), from Sanskrit भण्टाकी (bhaṇṭākī, “aubergine”), of Dravidian origin. Compare Galician berinxela, berenxena and Spanish berenjena.
