From Proto-Germanic *biskīnaną (to shine upon). Equivalent to be- +‎ sċīnan. Cognate with Old Frisian biskīna, Old High German biskīnan, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐌺𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌽 (biskeinan).
