Etymology 1[edit]

Probably from Vulgar Latin *bysseus, from Latin byssus (linen), whence bisso; cognate with English and French beige; French bis; Ligurian and Venetian bixo. However, compare badius (brownish color). Doublet of Bixio (a surname).
