Etymology[edit]

From Arabic بَطْحَاء (baṭḥāʔ). As usually in Maltese, the emphatic -ṭ- was made plain early on by dissimilation against the -ḥ- (otherwise we would expect *batħa). Compare Tunisian Arabic بَطْحَة.
