Etymology[edit]
Attested since the 16th century. From Middle Low German buxe, boxe, from buck (“buck, male goat”) + hose (“trousers”), originally referring to goatskin trousers. Cognate with Danish buks, Swedish byxa, Norwegian bukse, Norwegian Nynorsk bukse, Kashubian bùksë.
