Etymology

From Latin castīgō (reprove, reprimand; correct, amend), with the Aromanian suffix -edz, or from cãshtigã. Compare Romanian câștiga, with an ultimately different semantic development. However, a regional meaning can be found closer to that of the Aromanian in Transylvanian dialects.
