From Proto-Vietic *guːs ~ *kuːs (“fire; firewood”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[]ʔus ~ *[]ʔuus ~ *[]ʔuəs (“fire, firewood”). Cognate with Vietnamese củi (“firewood”).
