15th century. Borrowed from Old French cnivet (“little knife”), from Proto-Germanic *knībaz (“knife”), from Proto-Indo-European *gneybʰ- (“to pinch”).

The meaning "cane","rocket", was transferred from the group cana, canavela, canaveira, "cane".
