From Proto-Chamic *kayɔw, from Proto-Malayo-Chamic, from Proto-Malayo-Sumbawan, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kahiw, from Proto-Austronesian *kaSiw. Cognate with Indonesian kayu and Acehnese kayèe.
