Etymology 2[edit]
From Middle Irish ceirt (“apple tree; name of Ogham letter ᚊ”), perhaps from Proto-Celtic *kʷerxtā (“bush”) (compare Welsh perth (“bush, hedge”)), from Proto-Indo-European *pérkus (“oak”).[2]
