Etymology[edit]

Of uncertain origin; possibly from nineteenth-century Romani charver (prostitute), or Italian chiavare (to nail, to attach, to fuck), or from Romani ćhavo (child) and/or its derivatives, especially Spanish chava (girl), or from Spanish chabacanada (vulgarity). (Compare charva.)
