Etymology[edit]

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given an etymology by DRAE. A discussion on Latin Stack Exchange offers some tentative proposals:[1]
  • chicha (flesh) +‎ -ón (augmentative suffix). This seems to be the most common explanation.
  • From an unattested Latin *citione, from citum (supine form of cieō (to set in motion, move)), with semantic shift "move" > "blow (hit)" > "bump".
  • Derived from Latin caesiō (cutting), from caedō (to cut).”

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /t͡ʃiˈt͡ʃon/ [t͡ʃiˈt͡ʃõn]
  • Audio (Colombia):(file)
  • Rhymes: -on
  • Syllabification: chi‧chón
